How Did We Get Started?
From the owner, J. Andrew Salinas
After many years of part-time general construction and full-time high-level corporate work, I began to realize that my true calling lay in general construction. I loathed my corporate job, but couldn’t make the leap into full commission work. After many years of praying for God to make it happen for me, it finally happened. Finally, I jumped full force into roofing and construction and blew my expectations out of the water. As the top project manager of another company for years, I had been told I was “too picky” and “gave away too much,” but I knew that happy clients meant happy referrals, so I simply did it my way. I loved helping people and found myself truly enjoying my new career. I knew I’d never go back to corporate life.
One day, I was on a roof with an adjuster who needed some help propelling off onto a steep-sloped roof. I obliged and allowed him to tie off to my mid-section while he inspected the roof, which was not fun. He bought the roof, but a few hours later, I found myself in the most excruciating pain I’d never felt before. While I’d never in my life had diverticulitis, somehow this adjusters pulling on me had caused a singular attack which sent me to the hospital.
During the scan, the doctors gave me the bad news, I had a tumor on my kidney. Yep…Cancer.
Tenacity runs deep in my family, on both sides. Our family worked hard, without excuses, for the American Dream. We are ALL extremely strong-willed, tenacious, and independent, so it’s no wonder that the words “you can’t” are nothing more than a challenge! So you can imagine, I wasn’t quitting either.
I’ve never prayed so hard in my life as I had during these stressful months. However, when I woke up after surgery, it was as if a lightbulb had turned on, and all my prayers were answered right in front of me.
I woke up knowing I wanted to start a company, name it Ark, and try to give as much as I could to charity and to my homeowners. Great…another test!
A year or so later, during a follow-up appointment, our doctor gave us the good news, “There’s no sign of cancer. You beat it, and it’s not coming back.”
I turned to my wife, with tears in our eyes, and said, “…I’m starting Ark.”
